Questions, answered clearly

Learn how VIN reports work, what may be included, where the data comes from, and how to use a report as part of a smart vehicle decision.

Reports & data

A VIN report organizes available records connected to a vehicle’s unique 17-character identification number. Depending on the vehicle and package, it may include title events, ownership transfers, mileage readings, damage indicators, specifications, listings, and auction activity.

Coverage can include DMV title history and brands, ownership validation, title and usage timelines, accident and damage records, salvage or total-loss indicators, mileage verification, vehicle specifications, listing history, and auction records. Exact coverage varies by package and data availability.

No. Record availability varies by vehicle, age, jurisdiction, source participation, and reporting history. A missing record does not prove that an event never occurred.

Reports reflect available source records at the time of preparation. Data can be incomplete, delayed, duplicated, or entered incorrectly, so important details should be independently verified with official documents and a physical inspection.

VIN basics

Common locations include the lower driver-side windshield, the driver-side door jamb, the vehicle title, registration, insurance documents, and sometimes the engine bay or frame.

Vehicles manufactured for standard road use since model year 1981 generally use a standardized 17-character VIN. The letters I, O, and Q are excluded to avoid confusion with numbers.

The online form is designed for standard 17-character VINs. For older or specialty vehicles with shorter identifiers, contact support before ordering so availability can be discussed.
